The World’s First 5-Million IOPS Flash-based SSD System

The RamSan-6200 is the fastest, highest capacity SSD system on the market. The RamSan-6200 offers 100 terabytes of Flash-based storage in one 40U rack configuration that can sustain five million IOPS with 60GB/sec throughput. The RamSan-6200 is the only currently available SSD system offering anything remotely approaching this storage capacity and performance. For enterprises with large datasets requiring extreme performance and bandwidth, the RamSan-6200 is the ultimate solution.

The RamSan-6200 changes the storage equation for high performance computing users such as science and research labs, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications providers, large video rendering and editing facilities, and Federal Government installations. The RamSan-6200 is contained in one 40U rack and uses a little over 6 kilowatts. To achieve equivalent performance with current storage arrays and technology would require several thousand of the fastest, most expensive 15K RPM hard disk drives in an auditorium of disk enclosures and racks drawing nearly 60 kilowatts. The cost of such a solution would be astronomical as well, while the RamSan-6200 offers dramatic total cost of ownership benefits through power, space, and maintenance savings and costs less than one fifteenth of what a hard disk-based solution can deliver on a cost per IOPS basis.

Other SSD solutions claiming one million IOPS have been based on hypothetical configurations that may never be commercially available, whereas the RamSan-6200 easily sustains five times the performance and bandwidth and is available for purchase today.


The RamSan-6200 is an entire datacenter’s storage condensed into one 40U rack space. It is comprised of 20 RamSan-620s mounted in one datacenter rack. The system is managed through Texas Memory Systems’ exclusive TeraWatch software which allows for easy management of multiple RamSans from a single GUI console. TeraWatch presents a summary view of all installed RamSan modules and provides a single point for monitoring the performance of each RamSan module. A single RamSan-620 unit provides 5TB of reliable Single Level Cell (SLC) Flash with 250,000 sustained IOPS for random reads and random writes. Latency ranges from 80 to 200 microseconds, 25 times less than high performance hard disk drives. Each RamSan-620 unit can support 2 to 8 Fibre Channel or up to 4 InfiniBand links.

Enterprise-grade Data Protection
The RamSan-620 provides enterprise-grade data protection features at the chip, board, and system levels. At the chip level, TMS uses only SLC Flash memory which has 10x greater endurance and reliability than other Flash chip architectures. Additionally, each Flash chip incorporates an Error Checking and Correction (ECC) data field within the chip to check and correct single-bit errors. At the board level, each set of Flash chips is organized as a board-level RAID, thereby eliminating any single chip failure from corrupting data.

At the system level, the RamSan-620 allows you to designate one of the cards inside the system as an active-spare that works hand-in-hand with the chip level RAID on each of our boards. If one of the cards experiences a failure that degrades its RAID protection, the system will immediately migrate the data on that card to the hot-spare to return to a fully redundant state. At that point, the failed card will be inactive and can be swapped during the next scheduled maintenance downtime. Having the active-spare means that a faulty card can be swapped in a matter of minutes without the need to migrate all 5TB of data off and back on to the RamSan.

Finally, the RamSan-620 offers data management options for data protection as well. Logical Storage Units (LUN) can be designated in multiple configurations, including the option of assigning a separate LUN to each of the RamSan-620’s 8 (2TB) or 20 (5TB) Flash cards. This flexibility allows you to mirror LUNs for maximum data protection.
